ANNA
Anna Karina & Serge Gainsbourg
Pierre Koralni · 1967 · 87’ · FR
Originally Made for Television but Filmed with the Qualities of a Theatrical Release, This Film Waited 55 Years to Finally Hit the Big Screen
Likely aided by its soundtrack, composed by Serge Gainsbourg and Michel Colombier, featuring hits such as Sous le soleil exactement and Roller Girl, sung by the main protagonist of this romantic musical comedy—Anna Karina—as well as Hier et Demain by Marianne Faithfull.
All the elements of the vibrant pop imagery of the late 1960s are present: bright colors, long lenses, handheld cameras in the streets of Paris, comic book-style sets. However, this is neither a social critique nor a psychedelic journey. Everything, with the help of the ORTF, remains politically correct compared to the provocations of that time. It serves as a document of a changing era, and above all, it showcases the “music videos” of Serge’s pop masterpiece.
