A Jewel of Creativity About Robert Wyatt
Maria Trenor · 2024 · 86’ · Es/Bel
This animated film, praised at the Annecy Festival in June 2024, was approved by Robert Wyatt himself. Based on the legendary album of the same name, recorded in 1974, this interpretation seeks “to capture the essence, the artistic and personal experience, translating Wyatt’s emotional highs and lows into images and narrative.” Far from a biopic, this musical immerses us in the passionate love story of Bob and Alif, two young artists swept up in the creative whirlwind of the 1970s—a time of carefree living, abundant creativity, sexual revolution, and drug discovery.
A visual masterpiece, transitioning from hand-painted, color-saturated watercolor animation to surreal black-and-white films (the ones Alif creates), the film seamlessly shifts between reality and dreams. A sensitive and creative work, it complements the documentary Free Will & Testament, dedicated to R. Wyatt’s life, which was presented at the start of the festival.
