Since 2006, Brian Shimkovitz’s blog Awesome Tapes From Africa has been shining a light on obscure and wonderful sounds from across the continent. As a DJ, he brings the blog to life with 2-3 hour sets blending folk-pop, dancefloor gems, and hip-hop bangers. Traveling from clubs to festivals and DIY spaces, DJ Awesome Tapes’ sets celebrate the music and musicians whose tapes Shimkovitz has collected over the years. In 2011, ATFA became a critically acclaimed label, reissuing albums by African artists such as Ata Kak, Dur-Dur Band, Hailu Mergia, and Penny Penny. His DJ sets on two cassette decks explore deep regional sounds with an analog agility never seen or heard elsewhere.

DJ Marcelle is a huge middle finger to DJ culture. At the forefront of electronic music stands Marcelle Van Hoof, aka DJ Marcelle. Steeped in the punk spirit during her teenage years, the Dutch DJ and producer remains as far from convention today as she was at 16. Her motto: always step out of the comfort zone. Her 20,000 vinyl records, 30 years of radio shows and work as a print journalist, as well as her six albums, are a testament to her humble and passionate journey as a trailblazer—far from artists propelled to fame overnight by a few bangers and polished communication, like a flash in the pan. Jungle, free jazz, traditional music from around the world, as well as dancehall, techno, and countless other genres make up her infinite palette as a musician who transcends the rules of an overly standardized electronic scene.
