« You can’t know where you’re going without knowing where you come from »– Jack Womack
“Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear” a message on car mirrors in the United States, could very well apply to this 10th anniversary. Firstly, because the decade has obviously passed too quickly. This somewhat crazy gamble, which started in the basement of our offices, has, thanks to you, become the most cutting-edge musical documentary festival in France.
Secondly, because this glance in the rearview mirror reminds us that the objects of the past are not very far behind… and continue to raise questions about music and those who create it: Is today’s production still bringing originality? Or is it rather following models imposed by omnipresent, artificial, and hypnotic digital promotion?
“DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE!” is the mantra running through this edition, encouraging reflection through past experiences… We will often speak of anti-heroes, those musicians who have always preferred to follow their convictions rather than chase fame, even though sometimes their talent and vision eventually led them to it.
This year’s programming will be shown at Molière and Mégarama, including 6 films in competition, along with 4 others that are either unreleased or unjustly forgotten, from the extensive work of Mark Kidel. A recognized pioneer of the musical documentary, who will honor us with his presence to talk about his work, his encounters, and his journey.
This direction also inspired the decision to invite back DJ Marcelle, the unconventional heroine of DJ culture, and Awesome Tapes From Africa, the tireless explorer of African music—two important figures in the history of our nights at Cour Mably.
And to end the festival (because you truly deserve it!), a little bonus for this 10th edition: an extra few days. One will take place at the new St. Michel/Les Avant-Postes film club for an Arte evening, and the others will showcase an exceptional selection of 6 non-documentary films, of course new or intriguing, at the La Lanterne cinema in Bègles. Otherwise… all the details are in the pages that follow… 10 YEARS deserves 10 days!
See you soon…
