BOY GEORGE :

THE BOY NEXT DOOR

Ascension, Fall, and Rebirth of the Culture Club Singer

Mark Kidel · 1995 · 52’ · UK

Made at a time when Boy George was reemerging as a solo artist after a dark period of severe heroin addiction, the film explores the context of his rise as a de-sexualized star of Culture Club and the downward spiral that followed his success.

His friends and family provide enlightening contributions to George’s candid and humorous narrative of his rise, fall, and rebirth. English writer Jon Savage discusses George’s journey and his prevailing sense of having betrayed his sexuality by presenting himself as a sexless doll-like character at a time when being gay as a rock star could hinder one’s success.

An essential document for understanding a now-liberated societal topic, accompanied by a sharp portrait of one of the first to lift the veil.
