This documentary traces the complete journey of one of today’s greatest jazz musicians. The bulk of this film is built around two long, exclusive interviews with Herbie recorded at his home and in his studio in Los Angeles. The numerous programs for which the director met Herbie Hancock throughout his career form the musical archives of this documentary, complemented by footage from Miles Davis’s quintet, as well as concerts from Mwandishi and the Head Hunters.
Here, Herbie talks to us about his motivations, desires, artistic and professional choices, and his demons… about his friendship with Wayne Shorter, his engineering studies, his participation in film starting in 1966 through Quincy Jones, the recording of his first solo album, synthesizer programming, and his new production approach in the late ’70s.
