RAVI SHANKAR
BETWEEN TWO WORLDS
The Story of Indian Sitarist and Composer
Mark Kidel · 2002 · 89’ · FR
Ravi Shankar, born in 1920, was a master of the Indian sitar and became an icon of the hippie era in the 1970s, a time hungry for spirituality (Monterey Pop, George Harrison, Jimmy Page...), as he brought traditional Indian music to the West.
Filmed over two years in India and the United States, the documentary traces seven decades of his life. From a young age, he navigates through the Paris of the 1920s, the jazz scene of New York where he meets Coltrane, to the Hollywood of the 1930s.
Later, he would provide the score for Satyajit Ray’s first film and collaborate with Yehudi Menuhin, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and Philip Glass. These two complementary facets are continued by his daughters Anoushka Shankar and Norah Jones.
Mark Kidel bridges the glamour of limousines and fame with the interpretation of sacred music in the sanctuaries along the banks of the Ganges.
