TRICKY : NAKED AND FAMOUS

From His Youth in Bristol to His Solo Album, via Massive Attack

Mark Kidel · 1997 · 52’ · UK, FR

At the end of the 1990s, during the rise of trip-hop, Adrian Thaws forged a solitary path at the intersection of rock and techno. He grew up in Bristol, a city known for its racism, violence, and musical richness (Portishead; Massive Attack, of which he was a part).

This marks Mark Kidel’s first experience filming solo with his small digital camera, capturing a powerful account of Tricky’s inner world: his past as a delinquent, his mother’s suicide, and his family of entertainers and gangsters. It explores the roots of the turmoil that inspired his LP Maxinquaye.

Interwoven with clips and concert footage, the documentary forgoes voiceover. It presents an impressionistic, strikingly real portrait of passion, instinct, and the courage to be different.
