THE HARD-ONS :
THE MOST AUSTRALIAN BAND EVER !
The Wonderful Story of Australian Punk
Jonathan. J . Sequeira · 2024 · 106’ · AUS
Keish de Silva, Peter Black, and Ray Ahn, three migrant schoolboys (from Korea, Sri Lanka, and Croatia) formed this punk band in southeastern Australia in the early ’80s. The film follows their early struggles against skinhead racism to their global tours with Foo Fighters, Henry Rollins, and others.
They become the largest independent band in Australia, paving the way for a younger generation with the help of other bands like Radio Birdman and Hoodoo Gurus. Upon the release of their thirteenth studio album, the band reflects on the future and wonders if their carefree spirit is still relevant.
A surprisingly sincere and insightful film about a band that has always prioritized their lifestyle to avoid the traps of “R’n’R Suicide.” Their ability to provide a lucid and humble self-critique of both their music and their history constitutes the great originality of this documentary.
