FREE WILL & TESTAMENT :

THE ROBERT WYATT STORY

One of the Founding Members of Soft Machine

Mark Kidel · 2002 · 62’ · UK

Robert Wyatt, British drummer and singer, has always avoided the spotlight. This documentary features numerous historical clips and archival footage (U.S. tour with Hendrix, Soft Machine, Matching Mole), as well as beautiful live performances of Wyatt filmed in a specially designed studio by the director. In these scenes, we see him reinterpret some of his key works with a mostly female sextet (Annie Whitehead, Janette Mason), as well as Paul Weller. The film also includes interviews with sincere admirers such as John Peel, Brian Eno, Noel Redding, Hugh Hopper, and Phil Manzanera, as well as his lifelong partner and collaborator, artist Alfreda Benge.

This unique documentary is moving and respectful of Wyatt’s modesty, allowing him to express his humanist activism. It also showcases his sonic innovation, which simplifies in some ways while introducing complex tones and atmospheres in others.

Rock Bottom, his iconic album, will also be featured at the end of the festival.

The film will be screened again on Saturday, 9th at 3 p.m., with special guest Mark Kidel.
